Destination Films is an independent film division founded and owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment (the parent company of Columbia Pictures and TriStar Pictures). It was founded by Brent Baum, John Bertolli and Steve Stabler in 1998. Barry London is a chairman and President of Marketing and Distribution after he left Paramount Pictures. They are based in Culver City, California, United States.

They helped produce and distribute Thomas and the Magic Railroad. They were developing a sequel, but due to the negative reception by critics and the poor box office performance, the sequel was cancelled.[1]

History

Destination Films was founded in 1998 as an independent film production and distribution company. Destination signed a deal with Gullane Pictures in February 1999 to co-finance and distribute Thomas and the Magic Railroad in the United States as well as holding sales exchange rights in the UK and Ireland[1] which they would later sell to Icon Film Distribution. Soon after, they made a deal with Columbia TriStar Home Video that would see the former company's films released on VHS and DVD by the latter.

Despite Destination's efforts as a mainstream film distributor, the original company only released six films - none of which turned a profit - before shutting down in early 2001.

The following year, Sony acquired the Destination Films trademark and relaunched the company as a "niche" film division, now specialising in the distribution of action, thriller, sci-fi and anime films, which are usually co-distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films and released directly to DVD and/or streaming. It has also since replaced Triumph Films as Sony's direct-to-video arm.

All six of Destination's pre-Sony films are now owned by Samuel Goldwyn Films, including Thomas and the Magic Railroad, which Shout! Studios also has partial ownership of.
