Gordon Learns a Lesson is a magazine story.
Plot
One day, Gordon is boasting that he is the best engine in the station but becomes cross when Percy teases him for being big-headed.
Later, Gordon fusses that he must look the best for his passengers, so his guard gives him an extra polish to stop him from fussing. Gordon's driver reminds him that he must not be late to pull the Express, however Gordon does not care and states that he can catch up the time since he is a very fast engine.
The passengers are not pleased to be kept waiting, but once again Gordon is rude and tells them to hurry aboard as he has work to do. While trying to show off that he is fast, Gordon causes the coaches to rattle so hard that luggage falls on the passengers' heads.
After being complained to by a stout gentleman with a big moustache, the Fat Controller tells Gordon off. However, Gordon retorts that the passengers need him, as he is the best engine there is. A woman disagrees, stating that she would rather have Thomas pull the coaches, to which all the other passengers agree. The Fat Controller decides to let Thomas pull Gordon's coaches while he is shut up in the shed to teach him a lesson.
Gordon learns his lesson, and from now on chooses not to say that he thinks he is the best out loud, but to keep it to himself.
