Penguin Random House is a British-American multinational conglomerate publishing company formed on 1 July 2013 with the merger of English publisher Penguin Books and American publisher Random House. The conglomerate has more than 300 publishing imprints, including Golden Books.

Starting in 1989 with their Pictureback series, Random House began to publish books based on Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends in the US and Canada. They later published selected titles from The Railway Series in the US and Canada starting in 1990, with The Complete Collection being published in 1997 and reformatted editions of some of the books debuting in 1999.
